PAX Labs Launches Inaugural PAX Pulse Exploring Cannabis Habits
Quarterly Survey Showcases Consumer Usage Trends and Preferences
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif—August 28, 2019—PAX Labs, Inc., a leading consumer technology brand in cannabis, today announced the launch of its new PAX Pulse, a quarterly insights program highlighting consumer habits and preferences around cannabis consumption. The first survey conducted revealed increasing preferences for cannabis—whether to relax at the end of the day, elevate social experiences, or spice things up in the bedroom.
This poll was conducted by Ipsos and includes data from 2,700 total participants age 21 and over who have consumed cannabis within the past year in places where it has been legalized for adult use, including California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Canada.
The majority of cannabis users consume at least once a week.
61% of total respondents reported using cannabis at least once per week—including a majority of respondents across all age groups and geographic locations. Nineteen percent of respondents reported consuming several times each week and 32% reported consuming daily. Americans are more likely to consume cannabis daily than Canadians, with nearly two out of five Americans reporting daily consumption (37%), compared to a quarter of Canadians (27%).
People prefer to wind down with cannabis over alcohol.
Of those who consume cannabis, 79% prefer to wind down with cannabis—including both THC (67%) and CBD (12%) —whereas only 38% report a preference for alcohol and 17% for tobacco. Other studies show a decrease in alcohol consumption in places where cannabis is legal. Canadians are more likely to drink alcohol to relax at the end of the day than Americans—42% of Canadians report drinking alcohol is their ideal way to wind down, while only a third of Americans agree (33%).
Yes, sex is better with cannabis.
Approximately two-thirds (64%) say they like to share cannabis with a romantic partner often or sometimes. Those who don’t (18%) mostly say this is because they like to use cannabis, but their partner does not (15%). Among those who have been on a first date in the past year, 44% discuss their consumption with a potential partner after one date, and another one in five wait until going on two dates (20%). Of those who incorporate cannabis or cannabis-derived products in their sex lives (39%), the vast majority say they experience better sex when they do so (92%).
Not surprisingly, music enhances the cannabis experience.
Ninety percent of cannabis users enjoy listening to music while consuming cannabis. On average, cannabis users report listening to music half the time (48%) while under the influence of cannabis. Among those that report listening to music, the most popular genres of music to listen to while using cannabis are classic rock (50%) hip hop or rap (39%), pop music (36%), alternative rock/indie, and R&B/soul (32% each). Reggae (25%), metal and hard rock (25%), dance/electronic (23%), country (22%), and blues (20%) are also popular. In addition, about 40% of consumers say they have used cannabis before or while attending a music concert or festival in the past year.
About the Study
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between August 12-15, 2019. All qualified respondents are adults age 21+ who live in the US (n=1,200) or Canada (n=1,500). US respondents live in one of the following states: CA, NV, CO, OR, WA, MA. Sample is balanced to be reflective of demographics of the target group for the given markets. All completes have used cannabis within the past year. The sample for this study was randomly drawn from Ipsos’ online panel (see link below for more info on “Access Panels and Recruitment”), partner online panel sources, and “river” sampling (see link below for more info on the Ipsos “Ampario Overview” sample method) and does not rely on a population frame in the traditional sense.
Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online non-probability polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points for all respondents. The poll also has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points for Americans and plus or minus 2.9 percentage points for Canadians.
